Item Description
Only example known to Hake's, 3.5", no maker, picturing Larry Doby during his early Cleveland Indians days. Doby began his professional baseball career with the Newark Eagles ball club of the old Negro Leagues before joining the Cleveland Indians in 1947, becoming the first African American ballplayer in the American League following Jackie Robinson's breaking of the color barrier earler that season. Larry would spend a total of 10 seasons with the Indians and three years with the Chicago White Sox. Doby led the A.L. in home runs twice and RBI's once, finishing with career numbers of .283 along with 253 homers and 970 RBI's. Doby was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1998. Reverse curl along the metal back has all around light tan age marks; however, the front edge has much less stain with 1/8" dot at 1 o'clock, above the letters "IANS", a small bit below his name, a faint gray mark at 9 o'clock and a faint tan 1/8" mark on his neck/uniform at right. There is much air under the cello as made, although this is seen only on an angle and almost none when viewed directly. There is very little surface wear. Fine.
