Item Description
1.25" with varnished back paper, the earliest used by Whitehead & Hoag for buttons of this size. Top two lines read: "Pin Back/Pat. April 14, 1896". This paper was completely re-designed around December, 1896. Pictured in bluetone are three rows of players in "Newark" uniforms with apparent manager in center of the photo. The 1896 Newark Colts finished in first place in the Class A Atlantic League with a record of 82-61 under manager Oyster Burns, who also played a total of eleven seasons in the Major Leagues, finishing with a lifetime batting average of .300 and led the National League in both homers and RBI's in 1890. Notably, the Newark Colts were the only team in the Atlantic League that participated in all five seasons of the league's existence, from 1896-1900. Right center has shallow dent about .5x.5". Small surface wear in reflected light, mostly in dent area. Full gloss and VF. The only example we've seen in our 53 years and a front runner for the first baseball button ever produced. Paul Muchinsky Collection.
