Item Description
Elaborate artist assemblage consists of 8.5x12.5" wooden display base w/custom acrylic plastic cover and has overall height of 10". Centerpiece of display is 5.5x6x3.5" tall tin litho wind-up toy airplane w/built-in key. Marx. ©1940 Superman Inc. This toy was issued w/different colored planes, this has red body w/yellow wings and gold tailfins while the other varieties are gold, blue and silver luster. Plane is designed w/pilot figure and separate 3" tall figure of Superman attached to tail by a metal rod. Toy is designed to travel forward a short distance before the Superman figure flips the plane over 360 degrees and then repeats this cycle. Toy has been mounted to large metal gear on wooden base that features vintage collage style decorations including Superman radio and comic strip ads as well as Superman Gum Inc. gum card. Vintage lead soldier w/American flag has been mounted in front of plane, standing behind vintage "Superman" name/logo cut-out. Plane has scattered paint nicks/scratches and Superman figure has a few small spots of wear. Fine overall, but makes for nice display as assembled by artist Dan Makara. Dan Makara Collection.
