Item Description
12.5x20.75" on thin paper. Features quote from Democratic National platform reading "We Pledge Ourselves Anew To The Constitutional Doctrines And Traditions Of The Democratic Party, As Illustrated By The Teachings And Example Of A Long Line Of Democratic Statesmen" at top then referenced in attack listing Confederate officers as "The Long Line Of Democratic Statesmen Referred To:" including "Jeff Davis, Wilkes Booth, Robert E. Lee, John C. Breckenridge, Stonewall Jackson" among others. Author notes "Their Teachings: States Rights! Disloyalty! Slavery! Secession! Repudiation! Ignorance! Crime!" and lists the result of these teachings including "Loss Of 300,000 Northern Soldiers, Assassination Of President Lincoln, Disfranchishment Of Freedmen, Fraud At Elections, Scourging And Murder For The Attainment Of Political Ends." Concludes w/a wholly snide use of the famed Democratic slogan "A Solid South!" Left margin trimmed away, two vertical & three horizontal folds w/age toning along center vertical fold. heavy handling along top edge. Good. A scarce post-reconstruction broadside that is only the fourth we've seen. General Order No. 329 references a Civil War order from the War Department regarding the recruiting of African American slaves as Union soliders in border states allowing the slaves owner to "Become Entitled To Compensation For The Service Or Labor Of Said Slave, Not Exceeding The Sum Of Three Hundred Dollars."
