Item Description
7.75x9-5/8" vintage matte photo mounted on oversized cabinet mount to overall dimensions of  11x13-7/8" depicting 21 ballplayers in full uniform along w/a young boy in front of stadium seating. Notation at top of mount reads "Nashville Base Ball Club Season 1913," bottom of photo features player identifications. The 1913 Nashville Volunteers finished in seventh place in the Southern Association, w/a record of 62-76 under manager Bill Schwartz. An astounding total of 21 team members would go on to play Major League baseball, including notables: Bernie Boland, Charlie Case, Frank Gibson and Solly Hofman; but, by far, the most prominent member of this club was Claude "Lefty" Williams of future Black Sox scandal fame. Lefty was a top pitcher for the Chicago White Sox for five seasons from 1916-20, winning 23 and 22 games in 1919 and 1920 respectively. Due to his involvement in throwing the 1919 World Series against Cincinnati, Williams was banned for life from baseball by Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis. To the best of our knowledge this photo of Lefty represents the earliest professional baseball image of him in existence. Photo maintains superb clarity, mount exhibits some staining around the edges along w/paper loss across the top edge on back. Fine. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
