Item Description
2-3/16". Silvering 98% intact. No maker's name. This mirror is a souvenir from the St. Louis World's Fair of 1904 as this same polar bear appears on a stereo view card by Whiting of Cincinnati which depicts "Esquimaux Fighting Polar Bear in the Arctic Region Exhibit at World's Fair St. Louis, Mo.". On the card, the bear has two bleeding spear wounds one of which precisely matches the dark vertical mark on the upper left leg of this bear. The other mark was removed. The obvious visual features of the scene are: polar bear on big ice block, young man in fringed buckskin outfit with rifle and a light background image of a glacier on a mountainside. Close study also reveals at least four (and possible six or more) hidden (or blending) animal images- seen left to right as: cormorant bird head at lower left, tiny full figure husky-type dog between the bear's paws, bottom edge just left of center dog's head, and upper right at 2 o'clock a team of three harnessed huskies. Also on the right side between 3-5 o'clock, are what can be interpreted as an elephant with trunk profile head and a straight on view of what could be a gorilla's face. Very light surface wear in reflected light. One seen. Exc.  Alan Weinberg Collection.
