Item Description
7/8", one of only two known examples, with maker text on back "The Pettibone Mfg. Co. Cin. O.".  This amazing relic represents one of only two known Major League baseball teams issued in this series, with the Cincinnati B.B. club being the second and immediately precedes this item. Tiny, under 1/8", spot of luster off the silvered tin rim that holds a clear celluloid sheet over the photographic paper depicting the heads of 16 Pittsburgh team members, with the most prominent being manager/first baseman Connie Mack and first baseman Jake Beckley (middle row, third from right). Although Mack had a respectable playing career extending from 1886-1896, Connie's true greatness would shine as a Major League manager for the Philadelphia Athletics, where he would go on to set the all-time record for managerial wins before finally retiring after the 1950 season, having already been enshrined into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1937. Beckley was one of the most noteworthy sluggers of his day, splitting his career between the 19th and 20th Centuries and gaining entrance into Cooperstown in 1971 via the Veteran's Committee. The 1896 Pittsburgh Pirates ball club finished in sixth place in the National League with a final record of 66-63 under manager Connie Mack. Exc. Early, historic and rare baseball artifact. Paul Muchinsky Collection.
