Item Description
1.75", only known example to Hake's, with back stamp of J. H. Shaw in Philadelphia and includes 1898 patent date of Pin-Lock Co. of Chicago. Concave metal back holds 4.75" ribbon and there is a fixed horizontal bar pin. First Philadelphia Athletics button to feature an elephant, this piece celebrates the "Athletic Baseball Club" as champions of the newly created American League. Philadelphia would finish the 1902 season with a final record of 83-53 under future Hall of Fame manager Connie Mack. This ball club would dominate the first decade and a half of the 20th century, employing a trio of National Baseball Hall of Famers on the mound: Eddie Plank, Rube Waddell and Chief Bender. The sepia photo, without dot screen, shows a figural elephant w/rider at the neck, a trio of baseball bats standing atop the elephant's back, a horseshoe which appears wired on the front right leg and a clearly lettered sign on the elephant's side "Our White Elephant". Cello has a few faint pinpoints of age on the very outer edge. The ribbon text, stamped in gold and once brighter, but all easily seen, includes "Our White Elephant". The red fabric has about a dozen vertical stress lines (most just .5" long) but these show very little and are obvious only when held to light. Overall ribbon is VG and button is glossy, VF. Paul Muchinsky Collection.
