Item Description
Same size/design as the other two 6" buttons in this auction from the 1944 Cardinals but this version bears the date of "1946." Known made by St. Louis Button Co. but no sticker on cardboard back. Two short wires hold large safety pin. The 1946 St. Louis Cardinals won the National League pennant with a final record of 98-58 under manager Eddie Dyer. The club was led offensively by a trio of future National Baseball Hall of Famers: Stan Musial, Enos Slaughter and Red Schoendienst. The Cardinals would go on to win the 1946 World Series in seven games over the Boston Red Sox. Front has a line of tiny, like 1/64-1/32", surface scuffs on upper right quadrant about an inch below last three letters of League and going over to edge at 3 o'clock. They make a pale gray line in certain light. In addition, while from most angles the gold background appears solid and gold all over, if the button is held in certain light angles there are all over pinpoint whitish dots, apparently showing through of the white paper beneath the gold color. The button retains its gloss and bright color. Fine. Paul Muchinsky Collection Book Example.
