Item Description
Only example known to Hake's, 1.25" no maker. Super crisp, sharp and bold real photo at center, text on rim. Jackie Robinson is one of the most influential baseball figures of the 20th century. After graduating college from U.C.L.A. as a star athlete in multiple sports, Robinson would join the Negro American League's Kansas City Monarchs, joining another black baseball legend, Satchel Paige. Jackie would ultimately be recruited by Major League Baseball's Brooklyn Dodgers organization, led by Branch Rickey, who would eventually sign the star to a contract with their Montreal minor league affiliate, where Jackie would spend the entire 1946 season. On April 15, 1947 Robinson would start his first ball game for the Major League Brooklyn Dodgers, thus making him the first black ballplayer to play in the Major Leagues during the 20th century. Robinson would go on to be named the National League's Rookie of the Year and would later win the NL Most Valuable Player award just two years later in 1949. Jackie would go on to a brilliant ten year career, all with the Dodgers, finishing with an average of .311 to go along with 137 home runs, 734 RBI's, 947 runs scored and 197 stolen bases. Jackie would be elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962. Reverse has four very small 1/16" cello splits along the collet but these are so small they do not make any edge bulges seen from the front. The front does have a near microscopic speck of dirt under the cello near the top of his left shoulder. Centering is slightly to the upper right. The surface has only very minimal general wear. All noted for complete accuracy. The button remains totally bright, clean and with high gloss. Exc. Paul Muchinsky Collection. See next lot for 3.5" version.
