Item Description
From the same rare and desirable set as previous eight lots. This is the most sought after button in the set. 1.25" w/W&H back paper. Honus Wagner was the superstar shortstop for the 1909 Pittsburgh Pirates ball club, finishing the season with a National League leading .339 batting average along with 5 homers and a league leading 100 RBI's as well as a league leading total of 39 doubles. Honus is widely regarded as the greatest all-around shortstop in Major League Baseball history, finishing with career numbers of .328, 101 HR's, 1,732 RBI's, 1,739 R's, & 723 SB'S. Wagner was elected into the National Baseball Hall of Fame as part of the five player inaugural class in 1936, joining fellow all-time greats: Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Walter Johnson and Christy Mathewson. On the left extreme edge, there are four tiny dots where the yellow has the slightest trace of age tone. All of these are barely visible. The button's surface is almost totally free of surface wear with outstanding gloss. Exc. Rare. Paul Muchinsky Collection.
