Item Description
Only example known to Hake's, 3.5" no maker. Gray steel back that once had silver luster flashing, now almost all evaporated. Dr. Muchinsky considered this pinback to be a press version due to the colored background of New York Yankees symbolism. Mickey Mantle was the "Golden Boy" of the 1950s - 1960s New York Yankees powerhouse clubs, teaming with Yogi Berra and Whitey Ford to bring numerous World Championships to New York. Mantle will also always be remembered for the great home run chase in 1961 between Roger Maris and himself, in an effort to eclipse Babe Ruth's all-time single season home run record of 60. Of course, Mantle came up short due to season ending injuries in September while his teammate would go on to break the record on the last day of the season. Mickey would go on to finish his career with a batting average of .298 along with 536 home runs and 1,509 RBI's and was ultimately selected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974. The brass pin is functional but has obvious bend on the shaft. The front has extensive scratching but all of a very light nature. A few tiny white hairlines show with normal viewing but vast percentage of wear is limited to reflected light. Still w/nice gloss. Fine. Among the rarest Mantle buttons.
