Item Description
Three 16.25x21.75" artboards feature pen and ink original art (w/screentone accents) for complete three-page story originally published in DRAG Cartoons #7 in 1965 by Russ Manning and Dennis Ellefson (both of whom have signed screentone block at bottom of first panel). Art features satirical look at Craig Breedlove (referred to as Great Breedloathe) and the Aug. 5, 1963 land speed record of 407.4 mph he set w/his turbojet-powered Spirit of America vehicle. Story features DRAG Cartoons reporter retelling the development of the Spirit of America, showing Breedloathe breaking into US Air Force facility and stealing a fighter jet, which he modifies into the "Spirit Of Baja Calif." Last panel features reporter's "sneak photo" of Breedloathe's two-wheel car w/blank sheet being held up. When printed, this featured a photo image of W.C. Field standing beside a penny fathering bicycle and original photo has been included, paperclipped at bottom of artboard. First artboard has typed text strip paste-overs on reporter's typewriter, some having peeled off, leaving strips of glue staining. Each artboard has inked page number at lower left and shows some lt. scattered wear. Art remains clean and Exc. Great images of Spirit of America (just not with name). From the Archives of Publisher Pete Millar.
