Item Description
1.25" w/union bug on curl & back stamp. Baseball at center w/slogan around perimeter. Pin prick indentation on curl at 8 o'clock mentioned for extreme accuracy. Otherwise moderate surface wear & light oxidation on reverse. Exc. A rare artifact of the period just before baseball's integration that is celebrated by social cause, WWII home-front & baseball collectors alike. Though Baseball's color barrier held during the war the 1940s saw a renewed push for the integration of America's pastime. An "End Jim Crow In Baseball" demonstration occurred in July of 1940 at the New York World's Fair and at baseball's 1943 winter meeting activist singer Paul Robeson addressed owners urging for integration. Led largely by left wing political groups capitalizing on the shared patriotic national spirit advancing the position that if African American's could die in battle, they should be afforded the same opportunities as everyone else at home. Nearly a month after the war ended in Oct. 1945 Jackie Robinson signed a contract w/the Dodgers ultimately integrating the sport upon his call up on April 15, 1947.
