Item Description
16x21-7/8" artboard features mixed media original art for c. early 1960s Chipperfields Circus poster featuring stunning illustration of leopard print bikini-clad Zira swimming underwater w/large crocodile, w/her outstretched head near the fearsome reptile's open jaws. Zira was Doreen Duggan, who debuted this act, w/snakes and swimming in a tank w/crocodiles. Image area measures 14x20.25" and has rectangle at lower left for additional show notices. This area has handwritten notes that read in part "Zira The Girl Who Swims With Crocodiles" w/editorial note referencing need to update the text at lower left, reading "A Little Bolder With Red Right Edge." Art is comprised of a few cut-out and painted sections that have been applied to artboard as changes were made. This includes majority of poster design w/area surrounding "Chipperfields" name having some streaks of missing paint from tape removal and smaller spot of missing tape by right margin at end of "Circus" text. Chipperfields name shows some wear/soiling. Artboard has aged margin w/two pin holes at top center and is Fine overall, but art could be matted and framed for nice display w/strong color. Rare and unique circus poster original art. Printed by and from the archives of W.E. Berry, noted English poster printer.
