Item Description
George Foreman and Muhammad Ali spent much of the middle of 1974 training in Zaire, getting acclimated to its tropical African climate. The fight was originally scheduled Sept. 25, 1974 (Sept. 24 in the US due to the time difference) however, eight days prior to the fight, Foreman was cut above his right eye during a sparring session. This required Foreman to receive 11 stitches, w/the date of the fight pushed back to Oct. 29. Offered here is 25x38" stiff paper poster featuring the original design of the poster by artist David Mosley, featuring Foreman and Ali facing each other w/Africa behind them (Zaire outlined) w/promoter Don King at lower left. Controversially, top of poster features "From Slaveship To Championship" text and poster has images of African slaves above Foreman and Ali's images. This was deemed too controversial and the promoters ultimately opted for the title coined by Ali himself, "The Rumble In The Jungle."  As such, few of these original posters have survived. Poster has been rolled and has 28" diagonal crease running from margin by chains at center left to margin at upper right beside African woman. Scattered margin/corner tip wear w/some small tears. Fine overall. Rare and one of the most sought after post-war boxing posters.
