Item Description
2". No maker and without back paper, likely as issued. Shows him early in career wearing championship belt with slogan above "'Stick To Stecher'." While appearing to be a real photo, there is a very tiny dot screen. With a glass his belt plate is readable as "World's Champion Wrestler".  In the early 20th century, Frank Gotch was the top star and his retirement in 1913 hurt the sport. Stecher, a young contender from Nebraska, rose to national prominence by defeating Charlie Cutler for the heavyweight world title at Omaha July 5, 1915. Stecher introduced the Leg Scissors to professional wrestling and became its unofficial post-Gotch era good-will ambassador. Between 1915 and 1928, he won and lost the world title three times, the last to Ed "Stangler" Lewis. Rare with two known to us. Exc. Paul Muchinsky Collection.
