Item Description
19.25x29" frame w/6.25x7.5" openings for each page. "Oyster Bay, N.Y./August 23, 1907" at top right. Written to "President Benjamin I. Wheeler" who was University President from 1899-1919. Roosevelt, responding to a letter from Wheeler, states "I Will Notify The Post Office Department That I Will Not Appoint Thomas" and in the second paragraph notes "I Never Heard Of Fisk, The Postmaster At San Francisco. You Say 'He Spends All His Time And Strength Trying To Make Me Null And Void,' And Ask Me Why I Tolerate Such Things. My Answer Must Be Contained In The Above Statement That I Have Never Heard Of Him, Did Not Know Of His Name, And Naturally Did Not Know Of His Trying To Make Me Null And Void." Signed at conclusion in lightly faded black fountain pen ink. Horizontal mailing fold and light handling wear. Fine. Not examined out of frame. A terrific display w/portrait and plaque at right ready to hang upon arrival. Comes w/Hake's COA and JSA LOA.
