Item Description
Here is an amazing button steeped in western history. First, some highly condensed background. The Miller Bros., owners of the famous 101 Ranch, wanted the National Editorial Assoc. to hold its annual convention in Oklahoma to publicize their own enterprises. They succeeded in getting the NEA to schedule the 1905 event in Guthrie. Plans included a side trip to the ranch to witness a "Buffalo Chase" wherein it was reported (falsely) 100 buffalo would be killed for dinner. This became a huge event with 65,000 spectators coming by trains, wagons and horseback, partly to witness Geronimo "Shoot His Last Buffalo". A quarter mile long grandstand was constructed to hold the crowd for a great show by the Miller's cowboys and Indians. From the front seat of a Locomobile, Geronimo used a Winchester to kill a single bison for the editor's dinner. Actually, this was his first buffalo kill (as well as his last) as no buffalo ever roamed his original Apache homeland in the arid Southwest. We previously knew of three real photo buttons made for this event that picture members of the Ponca tribe, closely associated with the Millers. This is the second example of a 1.75" badly damaged button we offered a year ago (which realized over $375.) This example with W&H back paper is NM. It is specifically dated for the big event June 11, 1905. It uses the words "Buffalo Hunt" rather than "Buffalo Chase" used on the Native American portrait buttons. The issuer was "J.P. Souligny, Ponca City, Oklahoma" whose catch phrase was "Cheap Homes Where/Buffalo Did/Roam". Rare. Alan Weinberg Collection.
