Item Description
1.25". No maker name or union bug. Moderate wear from light use w/faint age dots scattered on reverse. Still Exc. Ohio Senator Mark Hanna, a coal company owner, intervened in the 1902 coal strike on behalf of the employers attempting to negotiate a deal w/the UMWA and their President John Mitchell. Sensing a disaster if coal was in limited supply as winter approached, President Roosevelt and his administration worked to arbitrate between strikers and industry. The Coal Strike of 1902 was the first instance of the US federal government acting as a neutral party to end a strike. Roosevelt wanted a 'Square Deal' for miners and mine owners and w/the success of the mediation he carried the slogan forward to the 1904 campaign.
