Item Description
1.5" w/"F. M. Webb & Co. Made In Seattle Badges, Regalia, Etc." back paper and horizontal pin. Portrait of TR flanked by figures in Rough Rider uniforms waving American flags. Button is attached via a metal loop to an embossed brass hanger w/rose design and "Alaska" cello insert. Hanger is missing original horizontal bar pin and cello insert has minor curl. VF. Button has only light wear in reflected light. NM as made. Superb color and graphics make this an especially striking TR rarity. On May 23, 1903 TR entered Seattle's Elliot Bay on the steamship Spokane to much fanfare as he continued his tour of the west. Among his Seattle events that day was an Alaska reception at the Grand Opera House where he addressed a crowd including members of the Arctic Brotherhood, a fraternal group located in Alaska, who gifted him a pan made of Alaskan gold. Roosevelt's address focused on the potential of the then "District" of Alaska that had not yet been incorporated as a territory, calling for a non-voting representative to congress and stating "Men Of My Age Whom I Am Addressing Will Not Be Old Men Before We See Alaska One Of The States Of The Union." These badges were likely issued to members of the Arctic Brotherhood in attendance that day and this is only the third we've encountered in our 54 years. Roosevelt was so interested in the Brotherhood that he met w/members privately the following day and later became a member.
