Item Description
These 1-5/8x2-3/8" Cuban cards were distributed in packs of Diaz cigarettes. The cards in this set feature players from the 1923-1924 Cuban Professional League, including many Cuban Baseball HOF members and Negro League stars of the day. 84 cards are in the set, making it one of the largest and scarcest of all 1920s Cuban card issues. Cards are numbered 1-83 and 85, no card #84 is known. Card fronts are printed in dark brown w/photos and names while backs include card number and description of the series w/offer for an album.  The rarity of this amazing set can likely be attributed to the fact that, upon completion, the collected set was to be submitted to the manufacturer for the aforementioned album and the assumption is that most of the cards were subsequently destroyed. This hypothesis has some substantial weight when we look at the SGC/PSA population reports, which confirm the existence of less than 10 graded examples combined for every card in the set. In this auction we present to you every card in the set, individually. Now is the time to start your collection, or complete your set, of these very desirable cards.

José Agustín (Becerra) Molina debuted as a player in 1894-1895 with Matanzas and followed this with stints on several different Cuban teams over the next decade before taking on the roles of manager and executive in the Cuban and Negro Leagues. He was manager, officer and/or owner of the Cuban Stars for the period 1907-1931. He was also manager of the Santa Clara Leopards including the legendary 1923-1924 team considered one of the greatest Cuban Winter League teams ever which featured Negro League stars Oscar Charleston and Dobie Moore as well as native Cuban greats Alejandro Oms and Jose Mendez. Molina's connections in the US and Cuba helped make a two-way path for Cuban stars to play in the Negro Leagues as well as African-American stars to play in Cuba. He was inducted into the Cuban Baseball HOF in 1942.
