Item Description
From same set as lot #782 and one of the key cards. Card front reads "Santa Clara B.B.C. Mendez-Pitcher." Jose Mendez was born in Cuba in 1888 and made his professional baseball debut in 1903 at the age of 15. Five years later, he was pitching for Havana, the top team in Cuba. After a brief U.S. debut in 1908 with the Brooklyn Royal Giants, Mendez was credited with a record of 44-2 in 1909 against all levels of competition while hurling for the Cuban Stars. Over the next two decades, Mendez participated in several of the most memorable pitcher's duels in Negro League baseball history, including gems against Rube Foster and Smokey Joe Williams. The "Black Diamond" as Mendez was referred to, was inducted into the National Baseball Hall Of Fame in 2006 and is one of the true legends of the game including his accolades as both player and coach in the Negro Leagues.
