Item Description
16.5x23x.75" deep box contains unused parts for Piroxloid Products Corp. game, ©1922. Game features Christy Mathewson (1880-1925), a MLB pitcher who played 17 seasons (1900-1916) w/the New York Giants. Nicknamed "Big Six" (after New York's most famous fire engine of the era), he was among the most dominant pitchers in baseball history, and ranks in the all-time top 10 in several key pitching categories, including wins, shutouts, and ERA. Elected to the National Baseball HOF in the inaugural class of 1936. Mathewson is featured on box lid as is his nickname, and image of gameboard appears behind him. Lid has all four corners split w/two .75" side panel tears and 1-3/8" long missing piece at lower left and 3.25" edge split at top left corner. Box bottom has two corner splits and two .75" side panel tears. Box is technically VG, but main lid panel remains nice for display. 16x22-1/8" gameboard has built-in "Spine The Pitcher" spinner w/image of Mathewson pitching at end. Gameboard features many play combinations, picked by spinner. Gameboard label is evenly aged and has some scattered discoloration to green field. Back of board shows moderate aging. Fine overall. Game comes w/complete and unused 14x22" stiff paper sheet featuring names/positions of "National And American League Players," including Rogers Hornsby, Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb among other players of the era. Separate section shows team line-ups from the 1905 World Series and is labeled "'Big Six' In World's Series 1905." Mathewson helped the Giants beat the Philadelphia Athletics four games to one to win the Series. This sheet was meant to have all the small names cut out and inserted into generic pins (not included) and inserted into board at player positions. Sheet is evenly aged and has small spot of discoloration at top right but is o/w VF. This is the only example of an uncut sheet we've seen in our 54 years. Comes w/original 5x7" glossy news service photo showing Mathewson holding an example of this game, w/attached caption sheet noting his recent convalescence from "pulmonary illness." Mathewson would die just three years later after his damaged lungs (the result of accidental exposure to chemical weapons during World War I) allowed for him to contract tuberculosis, which ultimately claimed his life. Photo/caption have some aging/handling wear and are VF overall. Rare game, even more so as unused and w/Mathewson news service photo.
