Item Description
1.5" w/curl text "Copyright 1903 By J. J. Geraghty." TR is depicted on horseback leading a group of seven African American troops up "San Juan Hill July 2, '98." Typical oxidation on metal back, scattered bumps to touch and moderate surface wear in reflected light. Exc. We have also encountered the button in a color variety but in total are only aware of four specimens between the two varieties. Easily among the most important historical buttons we've offered in our 55 years.
While Roosevelt typically receives top billing for leading the Rough Riders (1st Volunteer Cavalry) during the Spanish American War, some 2000 African American troops, from the 9th and 10th Cavalry and the 24th and 25th Infantry, fought in the conflict- six of whom were awarded the Congressional Medals of Honor for their courageous deeds. Their importance can not be overstated and their presence made the battle force the most integrated of the 19th century. These troops were celebrated by a generation of African Americans pointedly put by historian Rayford Logan-
"Negroes Had Little, At The Turn of The Century, To Help Sustain Our Faith In Ourselves Except The Pride That We Took In The 9th And 10th Cavalry, The 24th and 25th Infantry. Many Negro Homes Had Prints Of The Famous Charge Of The Colored Troops Up San Juan Hill. They Were Our Ralph Bunche, Marian Anderson, Joe Louis and Jackie Robinson."
