Item Description
29.5x32.25" cotton. Depiction taken from Asher Durand's copper plate engraving of John Trumball's iconic painting that resides in the US Capitol Rotunda. Each figure is numbered and named in box below. A similar example is listed in Collins', Threads of History as plate 418 on p. 200 where he dated it to 1876. While Threads is considered the preeminent guide on the subject of American political textiles, the copper plate printing, meticulous hand sewn finish work along top/bottom edges and large size all indicate this was produced well before 1876. Trumbull's iconic painting was hung in the Capitol to celebrate the 50th year of American Independence in 1826. This semi-centennial celebration makes sense as a likely catalyst for this items production. We believe this kerchief could have been produced as early as 1826 and no later than 1850. Vertical and horizontal well-flattened folds and scattered wrinkling that would possibly press out. Three horizontal separations along left edge. Technically VF and will frame to Exc. making a dramatic display piece in any setting.
