Item Description
1.25" w/"Whitehead & Hoag Co. Newark NJ" on curl and blank back paper. Candidates' portraits set in the clouds w/McKinley eclipsing Bryan who is set against a silver background. A tiny scratch in field at top right 1 o'clock is mentioned for extreme accuracy. Otherwise only light surface wear in reflected light. Superb centering and full gloss. Exc. A total solar eclipse in May captivated the American public spawning button manufacturers to produce a number of designs for the presidential campaign. Of these interesting designs that have long captivated collectors, this is among the rarest single picture varieties. See lot #231 for the jugate variety.
