Item Description
1.25" by 1/8" thick lustrous copper medal w/obverse portrait and "Thomas Sayers/Champion Of England 1859". Reverse ad for firm who also made a medal for each man for their 1860 bout a year later. Reads "Jos. H. Merriam/Die Sinker/18 Brattlee Square/Boston/Medals Struck In/Silver/Copper Or Tin." One carbon 1/16" dot and back edge at bottom has .25" line that dips on the otherwise high outer rim. A small error in the strike apparently. Rest NM. Historic early medal from what is considered one of the last great bare-fisted matches. Paul Muchinsky Collection.
