Item Description
1.25" w/W&H back paper. Additional text "Wm. D. Haywood 1907." Cello split at 5 o'clock and separation on curl at 9 o'clock. Obvious wear from use. Good. Haywood, a mine worker at age nine, joined the Western Federation of Miners working to increase wages and end child labor. Along w/Debs, De Leon, Mother Jones and others in 1905, he helped found the I.W.W. That same year he was charged (with two others) in taking part in the murder of Frank Steunenberg, former Governor of Idaho. This button was likely produced in celebration of his acquittal on July 28, 1907 which was celebrated as a major victory for organized labor. Only the second example we've encountered in our 55 years.
