Item Description
Uniquely designed, 8.25" dia. album on card stock w/12 pages including the covers. Metal grommet holds all together and original string cord remains as well. Pages are designed to be fanned out to view. This was a mail-in redemption premium for 75 coupons from its Old Judge and Dog's Head cigarette brands. Beautiful lithography w/full color fronts, backs have printing in blue. Front and back covers depict a baseball w/the inside covers advertising the cigarettes, as does page 6. The other nine pages illustrate in vivid color, either single stars of the game or groups of four players, w/an emphasis on the NY Giants champions of 1888. Back of the pages offer player stats for the previous season and schedule for various leagues for 1889. Among the stars of the day pictured there are a total of nine future National Baseball Hall of Famer's: Adrian "Cap" Anson, Mickey Welch, John Ward, Buck Ewing, Tim Keefe, Jim O'Rourke, Roger Connor, Mike "King" Kelly and Charles Comiskey. Both covers are loose. Front cover has 2" long edge piece loose but here, two other 2" long edge pieces missing. Back cover has .5" and 2" long missing edge pieces. Covers Fair. Extreme rim edge of each page from 6 to 8 o'clock has a faint streak of moisture staining. A few pages w/some small surface paper wear. Other lt. wear and aging but overall pages remain bright and clean w/strong graphics. Fine. The outstanding graphics and its extreme rarity make it one of the premier of all 19th century printed baseball items, and the most desirable of all pre-1900 tobacco premium albums.
