Item Description
1.25" w/union back stamp and "Newark, NJ 40" bug on curl at 6 o'clock. Vertical hairline scratch extending from edge at 7 o'clock into the left of Davis portrait and moderate surface wear including some light indentations- we stress that none break the cello surface and are seen under examination in reflected light. Conservatively extremely Fine but displaying much above grade w/superlative construction and full gloss. The rarity of this button cannot be overstated, likely equal to that of the 1.25" Cox & Roosevelt jugate found as lot #1 in the auction. Of the known examples one, that was involved in a theft decades ago and has not since surfaced, had issues at 6 o'clock. Of the other two examples known to us one remains relatively clean and the other has cello construction issues. Regardless of condition, this is among the premier Davis jugates in existence and represents a special opportunity to obtain a super-key 1924 rarity. Additionally this button can be paired w/a matching Coolidge (see previous lot) and a La Follette. Few collectors are able to complete this 'triple crown' set. If you have been seeking a keystone Davis jugate, your moment now beckons.
