Item Description
2.25" w/concave metal back and horizontal bar pin. "Boston 36" union bug in field at 6 o'clock. Unlisted in Hake but listed as JFK-503 in Harvey Goldberg's "The Campaign Items Of John F. Kennedy" on p. 23. Moderate surface wear from light use only in reflected light and a tiny bump above the "V" in "TV" from bar pin construction. Exc. The first we've offered in our 55 years. The emerging medium of television played a major role during the watershed 1960 campaign. Kennedy's father, Joseph P. Kennedy, understood the power of the visual medium, from his time as a film mogul, lessons he taught to his son who cleverly utilized them to build an onscreen persona. Speaking of the power of a candidate's image w/TV Guide in 1959 JFK stated "Honesty, Vigor, Compassion, Intelligence - The Presence Or Lack Of These And Other Qualities Make Up What Is Called The Candidate's 'Image.'" noting that TV images "Are Likely To Be Uncannily Correct." The evidence was clear in opinion polls reflecting who won the debates w/the majority or respondents who listened on radio choosing Nixon as the victor and those who viewed them on television overwhelmingly choosing JFK.
