Item Description
1-5/8" (41mm) brass. c. 1861. Text of note "The Constitution And Union Forever." Portrait has scratches throughout and overall the piece has wear from its intended use as a pocket piece. VG. While we have seen similar calendars featuring Lincoln, McClellan and Grant this is the only Scott example we have encountered in our 55 years. The former presidential candidate remained a key military leader advising Buchanan and Lincoln in the early stages of Southern secession. His initial "Anaconda Plan," calling for the Union army to capture control of the Mississippi River in an attempt to block southern ports was at first scoffed at but a similar plan utilized by Grant helped in bringing the Union victory.
