Item Description
2.25". St. Louis Button Co. back paper. Superb design with real photo portrait of Hornsby in Cardinals uniform flanked by "NL" and "World Championship" pennants. "We've Got'Em" slogan at top and cardinal on bat logo at bottom. The 1926 St. Louis Cardinals won the NL pennant with a record of 89-65 under National Baseball Hall of Fame player/manager Rogers Hornsby, one of the best hitters in baseball history. Joining Hornsby as fellow future Hall of Fame selectees were teammates: Grover Cleveland Alexander (SP), Jim Bottomley (1B), Chick Hafey (OF), Jesse Haines (SP) and Billy Southworth (OF). The '26 Cardinals would go on to defeat the mighty New York Yankees in the World Series. Slightly bumpy surface to touch w/a faint diagonal hairline scratch at center only seen in reflected light. Otherwise only a tiny spot of light brown tone on reverse at 12 o'clock not visible on front and mentioned for extreme accuracy. Scattered trace of oxidation to metal collet and bar pin. Still Exc. Pronounced hand coloring of the red bird logo at bottom center make this an impressive specimen. The only other example we have offered in our 55 years (and without back paper and lesser condition) was from the Paul Muchinsky Collection which sold for $4,543 in June 2021.
