Item Description
7/8" w/Brunt Co. San Fransico back paper. National Union of Marine Cooks and Stewards was made up of predominantly African American and Asian workers encompassing roughly 75% of their members. The group was a force in pushing for Civil Rights within the union and upper Northwest region. On July 5, 1934 during the International Longshoremen's Association West Coast Waterfront Strike two workers, Nick Bordoise and Howard Sperry, were shot to death. The events led to a San Francisco general strike that halted all work in the major port city for four days. This button was likely used during this strike. MCS members played a major role when 500 African American workers being recruited as scabs instead joined the picket lines and were welcomed into the MCS. In the aftermath of the 83-day strike and international attention almost all west coast ports became unionized, a major victory for labor unions.
