Item Description
1.25" with W&H back paper that also names American Pepsin Gum, specifically their brand "Cameo Pepsin Gum". This firm was one of the earliest to hop on the 1896 invention fad- the celluloid covered pin-back button, in fact they were also seemingly the first to up the bar of give-away buttons by quickly moving from 7/8" give-ways to the the more impressive 1.25" size. However, processes in 1897 were not totally refined so this and most other 1897 buttons with photo images on photographic paper are sadly lacking in contrast (a fault rectified by 1898). While low on contrast, the real photo image is not faded and actually has great detail but definitely helped by viewing under magnification. This is the one Sullivan example known to us. Other than the contrast and a thin blue line on the back paper, condition is glossy and Exc. See next related lot of four Cameo boxers.
