Item Description
16x20.75". Color Litho mounted on board. When the agreed upon U.S. compensations to the Eastern Dakota people, in exchange for their removal to a small reservation along the Minnesota River, began to fail due to the American Civil War the population began to starve, unable to quickly adjust to farming as a way of life and no longer extended credit by traders on their delinquent payments. Aggression erupted and between August of 1862 and late September of the same year, in excess of 350 settlers had been killed, 77 US soldiers and 29 volunteer militia with an unknown number of Dakota casualties. 2,000 Dakota surrendered or were arrested. President Lincoln was presented with a list of 303 men sentenced to death by the Minnesota Militia Court and approved death sentences for 38. The hangings in Mankanto on December 26, 1862 are considered the largest public execution in American history. Signed John C. Wise/1883/Hayes Litho Buffalo NY. VF w/nail chips at edges.
