Item Description
7/8" w/St. Louis Button Co. back paper. Hake #2009. Far and away the most beautiful of all Cox/FDR varieties featuring a waving American flag at bottom center and perched eagle at top. Scattered light brown foxing throughout. For extreme accuracy we also note several tiny cello splits on reverse curl that occurred in manufacturing and remain tight not taking the button out of round. Similar curl issues are present on the majority of the St. Louis Button Co. specimens we have examined and, in our view, these are merely trivial. Otherwise, cello surface has moderate wear in reflected light. Strictly Fine. This real photo design often has varying degrees of contrast and clarity issues, but this specimen is excellent on both fronts. That fact combined w/near perfect centering and the lack of any cello cracks make this a captivating example that remains impressive for display. This button and the matching 1.25" Harding/Coolidge found in the following lot are new discoveries, having been recently obtained at an estate sale in the middle west. See lot #251 for additional history of these coveted 'holy grail' 1920 jugate buttons.
