Item Description
Henry George's work Progress and Poverty published in 1879 became renowned worldwide. The first of these three buttons (W&H paper 7/8") is from his 1897 campaign as a candidate of the Jefferson Democratic Party running "For Mayor of Greater N.Y. Henry George". Second follows closely as he died four days before the end of the 1897 campaign. His funeral was said to rival or exceed Lincoln's in public turn out. This is 1.25" with W.H. Miller (a jobber) over W&H's (the button's inventor and maker)  (3) patent dates in 1894 and 1896. Last is from at least three years later as its W&H paper was used only 1900-1912. George's legacy continued on as the Single Tax Party- this rare green/white logo button reads around "Philosophy Of Henry George" with center entwined letters and flaming cauldron at top reading "A Burning Question" with the word "Single" over the entwined letters "Tax" followed at bottom by tiny "Do You See It". Perhaps the smallest lettering ever on a button! The Mayor button is scarce, the other two are rare. All VF or better.
