Item Description
These 1-5/8x2-3/8" Cuban cards were distributed in packs of Diaz cigarettes. The cards in this set feature players from the 1923-1924 Cuban Professional League, including many Cuban Baseball HOF members and Negro League stars of the day. 84 cards are in the set, making it one of the largest and scarcest of all 1920s Cuban card issues. Cards are numbered 1-83 and 85, no card #84 is known. Card fronts are printed in dark brown w/photos and names while backs include card number and description of the series w/offer for an album. The rarity of this amazing set can likely be attributed to the fact that, upon completion, the collected set was to be submitted to the manufacturer for the aforementioned album and the assumption is that most of the cards were subsequently destroyed. This hypothesis has some substantial weight when we look at the SGC/PSA population reports, which confirm the existence of less than 10 graded examples combined for every card in the set.

Card front reads "Santa Clara B.B.C. Oms-Outfielder." Oms was a Cuban center fielder in Negro League baseball and Latin American baseball, most notably with the Cuban Stars (East). Oms played winter ball in the Cuban League from 1922 to 1946. He led the league in batting average three times and won the Cuban League's MVP Award in 1928-29. He ranks second all time for career batting average in the Cuban League (behind Cristobal Torriente) with an average of .345 and he was elected to the Cuban Baseball HOF in 1944. This is one of the key cards in the set.
