Item Description
12x26.5x4” deep highly-detailed, die-cut box for set by Archer Plastics Inc. 1953. Box text includes “As Seen In The New Paramount Picture The War Of The Worlds. Men Of Mars Are Coming!” Die-cut lid features exceptional illustration which shows battle scene between “Mars Men” and the U.S. military with civilians fleeing, buildings crumbling and burning, flying saucer flying overhead and shooting death ray. Additional related images appear on side panels. Bottom panel depicts “Civil Defense Station” with civil defense workers and civilians including those that have been wounded and are being attended to. Original intent was to cut the box apart using the front and back scenes to create a diorama (which is why this box is rarely seen). Box has all-over moderate wear including surface paper rubs along edges and tears along front edge and die-cut border. Hole punch in upper left-hand corner. Box also has 4” split in one corner. VG. Set comes with four 4” to 4.25” tall “Mars Men” and two soldiers, one having gun broken. Also comes incomplete hard plastic friction Atomic Defense truck. Friction sticks. Wear/aging with 1” crack on front fender. VG. Set is largely incomplete, the selling point is the rare box.
