Item Description
2.5x3.5" deck of 52 playing cards plus one Joker and special John T. Brush card. Deck comes in leather snap closure case with inside printed in gold lettering that includes recipient "Miss E. C. Lockwood" and "National League Base Ball Club New York 1909." This case has heavy wear w/bottom panel strip missing. Good. The deck originally came w/one other card that served as the season pass and was signed by Brush, but this is not present. The deck features actor/actress photos at center surround by elaborate design that includes gilt as well as gilt edges. Those pictured include DeWolf Hopper, who popularized "Casey At The Bat" in vaudeville acts, Eddie Foy, Tyrone Power, silent film star William Gillettte, George M. Cohan and more. The Joker card for Marshall P. Wilder is ©The U.S. Playing Card Co. The card for team owner and President Brush is without suit or number but does have his facsimile signature. He was the team's principal owner from late in the 1902 season until his death following the 1912 season. Under Brush's leadership, the Giants were revived as a franchise, following a decline during the 1890s. The team won four National League championships and one World Series during his tenure. He was one of 11 executives honored by the Baseball Hall of Fame in the Honor Rolls of Baseball in 1946. Cards show only very lt. aging but appear to be an unused, clean and NM deck. A very different and rarely seen artifact for the baseball collector.
