Item Description
3.75x8.5" to 8.5x14". Included are ten pieces of ephemera related to the 1963, 1964, 1965 & 1968 Newport Folk Festivals. Covering some of the most important years of the iconic festival including performances by Bob Dylan in 1963, 1964 considered by many to be his greatest acoustic performance, and his controversial 1965 first electric performance. Some materials have scattered foxing, pen notations and handling wear. Most remain clean. Grades range from Fine to Exc. See additional history in an expanded online description.

DYLAN GOES ELECTRIC: 3.75x8.5" opening to 8.5x11" on thin goldenrod stock. Promoting the 1965 Newport Folk Festival w/acts including Joan Baez, Rev. Gary Davis, Son House, Memphis Slim And Willie Dixon, Lightning Hopkins, Civil Right Activist Fannie Lou Hamer, Mance Lipscomb, Alan Lomax and of most significance Bob Dylan listed first under the "Saturday July 25, 1965 8:00PM Evening Concert" section. On this night the man who was considered the top folk musician of the era shocked the folk world performing his first electric concert backed by members of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Boos and cheers can be heard as Dylan and band began Maggie's Farm going into Like A Rolling Stone, Phantom Engineer and It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry before leaving the stage. Dylan returned shortly at the request of MC Peter Yarow (of Peter, Paul & Mary) giving the crowd acoustic renditions of It's All Over Now Baby Blue and his final song Mr. Tambourine Man. There has long been controversy about why and sometimes even if fans booed Dylan this night with a litany of explanations from many of the era's luminaries but Dylan's world tour in '64-'65 would see consistently similar audience reaction. Dylan himself commented on the Newport crowd in a 1965 Press Conference stating "Well, I Did This Very Crazy Thing, I Didn't Know What Was Going To Happen, But They Certainly Booed, I'll Tell You That." Whatever the reality the moment has become among the most pivotal in rock music history. Brochure has only light handling wear and faint age. Exc.

"A Surprise Addition To The Festival Son House, The Dynamic And Versatile Blues Singer Recorded For The Library Of Congress By Alan Lomax In The Early Forties And Out Of Circulation Since That Time" (folds as issued w/scattered age toning and handling wear); 1964 blank back broadside on yellow paper advertising morning and early afternoon "Workshops And Special Concerts"; 1964 ticket brochure w/acts inc.
