Item Description
11x11.5". Cotton. c. 1806. Copperplate-printed w/scene depicting the folktale of George Washington cutting down the cherry tree w/inscribed banner above and the story below. Printed in brown on white background w/decorative border. Threads of History plate #39 on p. 63. Area of loss in bottom right corner on last two lines of the folktale and a horizontal pull in the middle of the second column of text that is barely seen. Otherwise moderate age toning and handling. VF. An excellent early 19th century textile depicting one of the most famous folktales of the first American president.
