Item Description
1.75". This single-day button refers to the Adrian Grange 911 petitioning Roosevelt to expand a project in Washington to construct what is now the Grand Coulee Dam. During the Depression, FDR was reluctant to build a dam on the Columbia River, as he wanted to limit federal spending. He initially agreed to the construction of smaller, "lower dam" further down the Columbia, which brought jobs and power to the region. However, many Washingtonians wanted FDR to greenlight the construction of the "high dam." This button was worn by one of those petitioning for the larger dam. By 1937, the construction of the larger "high dam," the Grand Coulee, was underway and described as the "eighth wonder of the world." Slight fading of the red lettering and a scratch just above the "4" in "Aug. 4". Otherwise light surface wear. Extremely Fine. Of the few examples we have encountered this is among the best w/the majority having significant fading and/or structural damage.
