Item Description
33x46-5/8" on thin stock w/program details on verso. Designed by Gunther Keiser for the 1969 German tour w/credit at center of right edge "Design: Kieser Portratfoto: Silverstein Farbfoto: Novo Studio". Featured in The Art of Rock as plate #3.185. A litany of varieties of this iconic design exists including the smaller and more often seen variety sold on the 1969 American tour that carries a "Darian House" credit in lower white margin. Do not confuse this example for those merchandising posters from the American tour. This larger and much rarer example was for the 1969 German tour for which Keiser's design was originally produced. This specimen was issued as a "Poster-Programm" with additional text on verso translating to "In this folded form it serves as concert information. Unfolded at home, it is also the original poster in DIN A0 format for the Jimi Hendrix Experience concert tour." While some blank back varieties were produced featuring single and multiple dates as well as tour blanks intended for use on bus enclosures, those examples are exceedingly rare and most of the few survivors have serious condition issues given the onion skin thin paper they were printed on. These program varieties, printed on slightly thicker paper, are also very rare and open to the same large size as the blank back examples. We could not trace a program example at auction over the last five years while we did trace several sales of damaged blank back images in that time. This specimen was discovered stored in a record by a former GI who spent time in German during the era. Machine folded as issued and intended to be sold on the German tour dates. Two vertical and three horizontal folds w/tiny separations at edges and holes at junctions. Still a bright and clean example. VF. The design is considered artist Gunther Keiser's masterpiece and a masterpiece of the concert poster medium. Stunning size, bold color and iconic design combine to make this one of the most attractive images of the era and certainly in the top five Hendrix poster images. Once framed this will be the focal point of any collection.
