Item Description
2-5/8x3.75". The 1954 Red Heart set was produced by the Morrell Company and issued regionally with Red Heart brand dog food. The set consists of 33 cards, each with one of three different, evenly distributed, brightly colored backgrounds: 11 red, 11 blue and 11 green. A bust portrait of a broadly smiling player adorned the front of each card, placed against the solid backdrop. The clean design features the ballplayer's name within an elongated diamond near the bottom of each item, just above the team name printed along the bottom white border. The reverse carries a biography, statistics, and the Red Heart logo. The set features most of the stars and future Hall of Famers of the time, of which Stan Musial is the most difficult piece in the set, as his appearance was not only a short print, but also his only 1954 issue as he was absent from both the Bowman and Topps sets that year.
Alfred Manuel Martin Jr. , commonly called "Billy", was an American Major League Baseball second baseman for sevens teams from 1950-61 and a manager for five different teams from 1969-88. Some career highlights include an All-Star selection in 1956 and a five time World Series Champion, four times as a player and once as a manager. His number has been retired by the Yankees and he has been enshrined in the Yankees Monument Park.
