Item Description
After Superman debuted in Action Comics #1 (cover-dated June 1938 and published April 18, 1938) a Superman daily comic strip began publication in limited newspapers (through the McClure Newspaper Syndicate) on Jan. 16, 1939 w/a separate Sunday page being added Nov. 5, 1939.  The daily strip had a storyline continuity separate from the Sunday page. In 1941, the McClure Syndicate placed the strip in hundreds of newspapers. At its peak, the strip saw publication in over 300 daily newspapers and 90 Sunday papers, w/a readership of over 20 million. These strips ran continuously until May 1966. Offered here is a 4.25x5-3/8" textured cardstock Christmas card, featuring full body image of Superman dropping Christmas wreaths, high above the Earth. Text reads "Merry Christmas From Superman And The McClure Newspaper Syndicate." This card dates to Dec. 1939, making it the earliest known Superman Christmas card, w/pencil notation at top of card indicating it was received Jan. 5, 1940 w/some additional pencil notations. Card has been signed in black ink at bottom right by McClure Editorial Department member. Lower left corner has some staining w/some rust from paperclip and some tiny surface paper pulls. Fine overall. Comes w/typed letter dated Dec. 8, 1939 on McClure letterhead, addressed to McClure cartoonist Wilhelm Timyn (Timym, and known professionally as "Tim"), who drew The Boss comic strip. Letter has been folded as mailed and has matching pencil notations along right. Some staining at lower left. VF. Letter has been signed by same person who signed the Christmas card. This is the only known example of this extremely rare Superman Christmas card and this is the first time it has been offered at auction.
