Item Description
13/16". While most ferrotypes were accompanied by a brass frame or shell, this particular frame is 9kt gold. From Fremont's third party bid in 1864 on the Radical Democracy ticket. This party was formed as the alternative to Lincoln's Union ticket, as its members felt that Lincoln did not go far enough on the issues of racial equality and ending slavery. However, Fremont ultimately withdrew from the race, understanding that he would only serve as a spoiler and hurt Lincoln's chances against McClellan. Ferro is slightly dark w/moderate surface wear in reflected light. Gold frame has moderate wear and some slight green patina. VF. John Hillhouse Collection.
