Item Description
1.75" with Western Badge back paper. Surface has numerous tiny cello bumps that show only in reflected light. Some small areas of light gray mostly near the rim and just a trace on runner's elbow. Race began at Ascot Speedway in LA on March 4, 1928 with 199 runners and ended at Madison Square Garden 84 days later on May 26th with 55 finishers led by Oklahoma Cherokee Indian Andy Payne. Known as the Bunion Derby, the event from LA to Chicago followed U.S. Route 66 and button has graphic of route marker sign. Promoter C.C. Pyle, from Chicago to NY plotted the course according to which towns would pay a fee. The race covered 3,422.3 miles and the runners averaged 40 miles per day.
